Based upon the cult, "Dark Horse Comics" publication of the same name written by Alan Martin & Jamie Hewlett. Tank Girl is set in 2033 amidst a barren and arrid landscape, due to a devastating meteor crash that caused all of the Earth's water to evaporate. Without going into too much detail, all the Earth's water is controlled by one huge super company come army called "Water and Power", which is fought by rebels and "rippers" (Human/Kangaroo Engineered Life Forms). One of these rebels is Jessica (aka Tank Girl) and after the destruction of her home and her subsequent escape from the clutches of Water and Power, she steals a battle tank and teams up with another girl who due to her stealing a jet fighter, calls herself Jet Girl (Naomi Watts).

On the whole this is rather dire, but it does have a certain charm to it, making it mildly appealing in an immature playful sort of way. There are one or two well shot action sequences but its altogether far too heavy handed with the whole "girl power" thing to be very enjoyable. The story barely holds together but a blatant attempt to sensualise some scenes works surprisingly well, in a vigorous pop video stylee. Being honest Tank Girl is a comic book that should have been left well alone, because it doesn't translate well to big screen.
