The Ice age has arrived and animals are migrating south. That is all except a lonely mammoth Manfred and Sid the sloth who has overslept. Much to Manfred's disgust Sid teams up with him and they discover a human baby who is a survivor of a sabre tooth tiger attack. The tigers want the baby and send Diego to get him back, however Manfred and Sid are determined to take him back to the humans. Seeing no easy way to get the baby Diego decides to lead this unlikely couple of nannies into a deadly trap. Meanwhile Scrat is having trouble hiding his acorn.

Yep its another computer animated feature and what with Pixar's Monsters Inc. being reviewed a couple of weeks ago expectations are high. Fox studios who's first animated feature Titan A.E. while not a bad film failed at the box office, produced this film. One major re-think later, a switch to pure computer animation and we have a film much closer to Shrek and Monsters Inc. both in terms of style and quality. Ok so it may not reach the heights of the previously mentioned two movies but this is a fun filled, very entertaining movie.

The story is a simple one of animals taking human baby home while other animals try to eat the baby. However this has been used to investigate to place of the various animals (and I include humans here) in the food chain. Humans kill the other animals for food and resources, so do the sabre tooths, the mammoths struggle to survive these predators and so on. So with the baby the animals have to look after their main predator this leads to some poignant and heart warming scenes. Unfortunately this also leads to a rather over smaltzy ending.

What this film has going for it in spades is comedy. The characters of Sid and Scrat are hilarious, its just a shame that the laughs are not more equally shared. Without doubt this film will have both adults and children laughing out loud. My only minor quibble is one that I touched on and that is that all the laughs come from two characters and one of those has nothing to do with the story. This means that the main story and comedy elements never really integrate fully.

The quality of animation is very good and while I still think Pixar has the edge the gap is now very narrow. The voice cast is excellent with special mention to John Leguizamo who as Sid steals show.

Overall Ice Age is a good funny film. Kids will love the cute characters and the slapstick, and the adults will get many laughs out of the more complicated gags. It may not be as good as Monsters Inc. but this doesn't stop it being a very good film. It is at times a little over sentimental and occasionally the comedy feels a little tacked on but these turn out to be minor faults. Ice age is another of the growing list of top quality computer animated features. This is a very funny film and if you don't believe me go and see the dodo's.
